Counselling Chelmsford Essex FAQs
What can counselling help with?
Counselling can be useful for someone who wants to explore the way they are thinking or feeling, as well as anyone experiencing a problem or issue they are keen to resolve. People may choose to speak to a therapist because they feel they can't speak to their partner, friends or family about their problems, or they simply wish to speak to a professional with an objective viewpoint.
Common subjects/issues that can be addressed within counselling are:
Depression, Bereavement, Relationship Issues, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsory Disorder, Issues around Children, Bullying, Illness, Sexual Abuse, Stress, Domestic Abuse, Abortion, Addiction, Miscarriage, Anger, Self-harm, Panic Attacks, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Low Self-Esteem, Postnatal Depression, Suicidal Thoughts, Eating Disorders, Separation and Divorce.
If you are experiencing any of the above issues or perhaps you are not sure what is troubling you, please contact me for an initial consultation.

How can counselling help?
This depends on the person coming for counselling. For many, the fact that counselling offers a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space to speak in, is often all it takes. While I will not give you concrete advice or a checklist of things to do to feel better, what I will try and help you understand is how past experiences and current behaviour may be connected. This can help you to uncover your own insight and understanding of your problems, providing you with the tools, which will then help you to resolve them on your own.
For the majority of my clients a single session is rarely enough in order to overcome whatever is troubling them. Counselling is a journey, and it takes time and consistency to work effectively. This is why most people chose to attend regular sessions in order to get the most out of the process.
Counselling can also help you to understand yourself better and the way you think. This will allow you to get a clearer understanding of your difficulties, thereby enabling you to better manage your way through any problems you are facing, leading to feeling more positive.
Lastly, counselling can also help you to see things from someone else's viewpoint better, which may in turn give you a better understanding of the way you perceive words and actions.

What can I expect from counselling?
Deciding to come for counselling may be a daunting thought but the decision to get help and begin to address the difficulties you are having is an important first step and should be commended. Having some idea of what to expect from counselling may help you feel less anxious, especially about your first appointment.
In the first session I will establish some clear boundaries around what you can expect from me and what I can expect from you. This includes things like days and times of the sessions, confidentiality agreement and how and when I can be contacted in between sessions. A counselling contract will be drawn up to this effect.
In your first session I will ask you some questions about what has brought you to counselling in order to gain an understanding about what is worrying you and how your thought processes work. I may ask you things like; "Why are you seeking counselling?", "What is your current situation?" and "What is your personal history?" This will give me an opportunity to understand what you hope to gain from counselling as well as giving me a chance to understand more about you as a person and why these issues may have occurred.
I will encourage you to be open and honest when answering these questions as this will allow you to get the most out of the sessions. The aim is for us to build a trusting relationship where you feel safe to discuss all of your worries, thoughts and feelings.

What does the counselling process involve?
Counselling is not a quick fix and I will not tell you what to do. Counselling often involves talking about painful and upsetting experiences, emotions and memories and this can sometimes feel really difficult and uncomfortable. It may even make you feel worse for a while but over time you should start to feel better.
To get the most out of the counselling process you should try and attend regularly, bearing in mind that you may find some sessions more helpful than others.
